Emerging technologies explored at Richmond World Festival

Cutting-edge cultural mashups will shine a
spotlight on our connections to the land and our ideas about community and home
during the Richmond World Festival this long weekend.
Media works and site-specific instillations
by 23 local and national artists will be featured at the festival, presented by
Coast Capital Savings, Friday, Sept. 1 and Saturday, Sept. 2 at Minoru Park.
A mix of performance art and theatre, Your
Kontinent Digital Carnival celebrates Canada 150 and incorporates current and
emerging digital technologies.
“Coast Capital Savings has deep roots in
Richmond, and what better way to show our love for the city’s rich
multiculturalism than to partner with the Richmond World Festival? It’s a great
fit for us; it’s local, free and fun,” says Wendy Lachance, director of
community leadership at Coast Capital Savings. “It’s also important to us that
this fantastic event is youth-focused, which aligns with our community promise
to build a richer future for youth in our community.”
Featured artist Cindy Mochizuki will present
a multi-media performance that combines animation, ephemera and found media
sources to tell a series of short stories, reflecting on the directions,
choices and paths forced on us by the impact of war. The performance begins
with historical materials from the artist’s grandmother and the internment of
Japanese Canadians during the Second World War.
More traditional cultural explorations will
be featured in the festival’s Global Village and cultural pavilions. A
highlight is the Bamboo Theatre, featuring a line-up of amazing artists and fun
activities, including the Chinese Opera Tent —a colourful, behind-the-scenes
look at one of Asia’s most popular art forms. Bamboo Theatre is produced by the
Vancouver Cantonese Opera Society.
A free celebration of music, food and
culture, the Richmond World Festival will feature over 75music and dance
performances on nine stages, including headline shows by popular Canadian
rockers Tokyo Police Club and Korean hip hop star Verbal Jint.
Other festival highlights include the
FEASTival of Flavours with more than 50 food trucks, Culinary Stage featuring
top local chefs, Kids World children’s activity area; the Artisan Marketplace
with over 50 exhibitors; and Imagination World at the Richmond Public Library.
Richmond Museum and Richmond Art Gallery will also be open throughout the
festival.
The Richmond World Festival is produced by
the City of Richmond.
